The Confederation Flag, also known as "The cross flammé", on its curent incarnation was adopted after the 1826 revolution, after which the Confederation has become a true unified state.
In 1826, confederation's parliament, a competition was hold to design a new flag, representing all of what the new state and institutions are made.
That was Léopodo Robèrt won it.
Criteria were to put together the banners of the two ex federal entities who composed the confederation, Rhaetic League and Swiss Confederation. Robèrt barely won against the Municher Heinrich Müller and his more traditional flammé flag.
The flag holds the HRE banner's cross Blanc on a field Gules (adopted by the Swiss Cantons since long ago, Schwytz noticeably), the party crosses Sable and Argent (transformed in Gules for color equilibrium reason) and Or and Azur of the Rhaetic League.
Height flamures comes out of the center of the crosses. In the fields Gules, there are a flamure Sable and Or representing the cantons holding these tinctures (For example Bern) so the western cantons and a flamure Argent and Azur representing too the holding cantons, noticeably a good chunk of the eastern ones (Zurich, Zug, Luzern, Aargau, Ravensburg… ).
Meanwhile, the flamures in the fields Sable represent the Tirol-Adigio (Gules and Argent) and Grischun (Or and Azur).
The six stars are taken from the Rhetic League flag, on which they represented the league 6 members when the Cisalpine Alliance was concluded, but are reinterpreted to represent the 3 level of the federation : the confederation, the cantons and provinces (ex common and particular lordships) and the communes (municipalities).

En 1826, le parlement de la confédération lança un concours pour élaborer un drapeau représentant tout ce qui fait la confédération.
Ce fut Léopodo Robèrt, un peintre Romand, qui gagna le concours.

Les critères était de parvenir à fusionné les bannières des deux entités fédérales qui compose la confédération, la ligue Rhétique et la Confédération Suisse. Léopodo Robèrt battu de peu le peintre munichois Heinrich Müller, avec son design de drapeau flammé à étoiles (celui d'Heinrich reprenait un drapeau traditionnel pleinement flammé).
Le drapeau reprend la croix blanche centrale sur fond de gueules de la bannière du Saint-Empire (adopté depuis longtemps par les cantons suisses, Schwytz notamment), les croix écartelé en or et azur et argent (transformé en gueules pour des raisons d'équilibre) et sable de la ligue rhétique.
